POSITION: Residential Worker B

FACILITY: The Salvation Army Charlottetown Community Church - Shifts will be at Charlottetown Homelessness Services

JOB PURPOSE: The Residential Worker B provides a safe and secure environment for residents and visitors.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

CHARACTERISTIC JOB DUTIES: The incumbent is responsible for the following range of job duties characteristic, or typical of the job class:

  • Monitors the activities of the clients/residents and maintains availability for personal, practical and morale support; may include providing safe storage and recording of prescribed medications
  • Accurately records day-to-day happenings using appropriate methods; maintains logbooks and completes occurrence reports
  • Liaises with referral sources and other external agencies as needed (e.g. welfare, police, parole, urgent situations)
  • Coordinates client care relating to security issues; may be directly involved in taking urine samples, doing bed checks, room/personal searches
  • May carry out inspection/security checks of property and grounds in accordance with policies and procedures
  • Handles the admission, orientation and evaluation of clients' understanding of rules; ensures ongoing enforcement of policies, which may include client discipline
  • May handle finances relating to room rentals and meal tickets, and receipting of same
  • May serve as Receptionist for Shelter
  • May prepare or provide simple meals for clients/residents
  • Performs other duties as assigned

NOTE: Not all incumbents perform all of the duties described above but perform a similar range of duties.

QUALIFICATIONS AND EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS:

MINIMUM EDUCATION LEVEL ATTAINED: The successful job applicant will have completed high school, plus specialized courses of up to six (6) months (Addictions Facilities).

NOTE: An alternative level of education and experience may be acceptable. SPECIAL LICENSES, DIPLOMAS, CERTIFICATIONS OR REQUIREMENTS: The successful applicant will hold/have:

  • Addiction Facility - Addictions Counselling Courses

MINIMUM PRIOR RELATED EXPERIENCE: The incumbent must have the following experience before hire:

More than three months but less than one year of prior related experience, including, experience with frontline work in a social services setting. PHYSICAL EFFORT/DEXTERITY REQUIRED: The performance of the job requires moderate amounts of keyboarding, and performing walk abouts. CONCENTRATION REQUIRED: The performance of the job requires continuously monitoring the environment, monitoring security cameras and attentiveness when interacting with clients and recording information. RESPONSIBILITY FOR FINANCIAL RESOURCES: The incumbent's responsibility for Financial Resources:

The incumbent is involved in minor financial matters regularly, or on a relief basis, or has responsibility for the wise use of his/her own resources. He/She may be authorized to spend, disburse, or collect small amounts of cash. The incumbent has very little input into the annual budget. RESPONSIBILITY FOR HUMAN RESOURCES: The incumbent's responsibility for Human Resources:

The incumbent is responsible for his/her own time and effort only. He/She may demonstrate work methods to new employees, volunteers and/or students. WORK ENVIRONMENT: The incumbent's work environment is typically in a shelter and/or in treatment facilities.

The incumbent will work under the following disagreeable conditions:

  • Dealing with angry people
  • Abusive people
  • Verbal abuse
  • Isolation
  • Work schedule affecting lifestyle

The incumbent my have little to no travel required.

The incumbent carries a pager/walkie talkie and will work shift. EXPOSURE TO HAZARDS: The job incumbent may be exposed to the risk of minor to moderate injury or illnesses due to:

  • Physical attacks by others
  • Exposure to infectious diseases
  • Exposure to bodily fluids
  • Sharp objects
  • Other dangerous situations
PRECAUTIONARY MEASURES: The incumbent must take the following precautionary measures (in addition to health and safety rules):

  • Universal precautions
  • Immunization for Hepatitis B
  • Vaccination against Tuberculosis
  • Current Certification in First Aid/CPR
  • Criminal Police Investigation Check (CPIC)
  • Non-violent crisis intervention training

WORKING CONDITIONS: Casual (on call) - no guaranteed hours

Salary: $22.00 per hour
