Department of Surgery, University of Saskatchewan
The University of Saskatchewan offers a one-year Clinical Fellowship in Neuro-Spine Surgery. The Fellowship is designed to prepare neurosurgeons for a career in Community Spine Surgery.
Clinical Excellence
Promoting a diverse and intense clinical experience is a central priority of the fellowship program. Acute Care and emergency neuro-spine rotations will take place in Regina at the Regina General Hospital. This facility functions as the Tertiary referral center for the southern half of the Province of Saskatchewan, and therefore provides a large volume of diverse spine urgent and emergent cases. The Regina General Hospital also provides Trauma services for the southern half of the province which will provide the Fellow with the opportunity to enhance their spine trauma management skills.
The Fellow will have the opportunity to participate in simple and complex spine surgery procedures, supported by the spine surgeons in an environment of cutting-edge technology including intraoperative 3-D imaging linked to stereotactic navigation. State-of-the-art magnification devices enhance minimally invasive and microsurgical techniques.
Opportunities will also be available for teaching of Graduates and Undergraduate students in both clinical and operating room settings.
Academic Excellence
The fellowship has an educational curriculum including reading, journal article reviews, and formal rounds presentation. All fellows are expected to develop research programs, based on their personal interest and career ambitions. Clinical research endeavors are supported, and fellows will be encouraged to present their work at major National/International meetings.
A fellowship candidate must meet the following criteria: (1) has completed training and holds an M.D. or equivalent degree and (2) has completed an accredited Neurosurgery Residency with certification upon starting the fellowship. Applicants who are International Medical Graduates (IMGs) must have MCCQE1 (or equivalent) and may be required to provide a language exam to meet the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Saskatchewan licensing requirements. Please refer to the PGME Clinical Fellowship Guidelines for additional information and required documents.
All qualified candidates are encouraged to apply; in accordance with immigration requirements, preference will be given to Canadian citizens and permanent residents of Canada.
