Are you a dynamic communicator with a passion for media relations and strategic storytelling? The City of Regina is seeking an experienced Manager, Media Relations, to lead our efforts in enhancing the City's image, reputation, and visibility.

Reporting to the Director of Strategic Communications and Media Relations, this role involves crafting and executing comprehensive media strategies to enhance the City's image, build public trust, and ensure consistent messaging across all platforms.

Additionally, you will lead a team responsible for managing media inquiries, overseeing crisis communication, creating and sharing compelling information that aligns with the City's overall strategic objectives.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Develop and execute strategic media relations programs aligned with the City's vision and strategic goals.
  • Oversee the creation, approval, and distribution of high-quality media materials, including news releases, key messages, and media kits.
  • Act as the primary point of contact for media inquiries, managing interactions to ensure clear, consistent communication.
  • Build and maintain strong relationships with journalists, media outlets, and influencers to enhance the City's visibility and reputation.
  • Plan and coordinate media events, briefings, and interviews, ensuring seamless execution and impactful presentations.
  • Monitor media coverage and analyze its impact on the City's reputation, identifying trends and opportunities for engagement.
  • Provide strategic advice and training to City leaders and spokespeople on media relations and message delivery.
  • Lead operational planning and budgeting for the Media Relations branch, ensuring alignment with corporate objectives.
  • Supervise and mentor a dedicated team, fostering a culture of excellence and collaboration.
  • Identify and mitigate risks associated with media relations, including crisis communication and reputation management.

Key Qualifications

  • To be successful in this role, you will need a degree in Journalism, Communications, or a related field, coupled with several years of progressive experience in media relations, public relations, or corporate communications, including leadership responsibilities.
  • At least five (5) years in a leadership or managerial role.
  • Demonstrated expertise in managing media inquiries, creating communication strategies, and executing high-profile media events.
  • Experience in crisis communication and reputation management is an asset.

To be successful, you will have:

  • Strong knowledge of media relations principles, public relations strategies, and crisis communication best practices.
  • Familiarity with media monitoring tools and techniques to track and analyze media coverage.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to craft compelling messages tailored to diverse audiences.
  • Advanced interpersonal skills to build relationships with media professionals, internal teams, and external stakeholders.
  • Strong problem-solving and decision-making abilities, especially in high-pressure situations.
  • Proven leadership skills to mentor and guide a team toward achieving strategic goals.
  • Knowledge of budget planning, forecasting, and financial management.
  • Familiarity with the Local Authority Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act (LAFOIPP).
  • Exceptional organizational skills to manage multiple priorities and meet tight deadlines.
  • Ability to adapt to changing circumstances and proactively identify opportunities for improvement.
