Job Summary:

SHA Roof Garden Summer Student will support the maintenance and operation of the aeroponic grow towers to ensure successful plant growth and harvest. This position provides hands-on experience in sustainable urban food production and works collaboratively with Nutrition and Food Services to align harvest timelines with production planning. The role is ideal for students who are eager to gain practical experience in innovative food-growing techniques and local food systems in institutions.

Specific Accountabilities:

  • Assist with aeroponic irrigation and tower set up and shut down.
  • Assist with the planting process, including seeding and transplanting new plants into aeroponic grow towers.
  • Monitor plant health and growth, ensuring optimal conditions for successful yields.
  • Conduct routine checks of pH levels and nutrient solutions, making necessary adjustments as needed.
  • Maintain cleanliness of the towers and surrounding workspace to uphold food safety and operational efficiency.
  • Identify and troubleshoot issues related to plant health, nutrient imbalances, and equipment function.
  • Collaborate with Nutrition and Food Services to align harvest timelines with food production needs.
  • Follow best practices for sustainable urban agriculture and contribute ideas for process improvements.
  • Perform general upkeep tasks to ensure an efficient and productive growing environment.

  • Ability to communicate effectively with co-workers and clients at all levels of the organization.
  • Must be comfortable working independently without extensive supervision.
  • Ability to work in a in a team environment
  • Must be a motivated self-starter with excellent organization and time management skills.
  • Ability to make quick and accurate day to day decisions
  • Currently enrolled in or recently completed a post-secondary program related to horticulture, agriculture, nutrition, or a related field.
  • Interest in aeroponic growing systems, sustainable food production, and urban agriculture.
  • Strong observational and problem-solving skills with the ability to work independently.
  • Ability to work in an outdoor environment and perform hands-on tasks related to plant care.
  • Excellent communication skills to effectively coordinate with team members and Nutrition and Food Services.
  • Basic understanding of plant care and willingness to learn aeroponic growing techniques.
  • Ability to follow safety protocols and guidelines related to food production and garden maintenance.
